So, what do these words mean? There is so much dispute, argument and confusion and few seem to be able to shed much light on the situation, which is probably why the debate continues. Here I will see if I can expose the truth in an undeniable and self-apparent way, leaving little room for the confusion to continue.
On looking at the above names, assuming they do indeed all mean the same thing (and I say they do), you will begin to see (if you haven’t already) that there is actually no room for confusion anyway, as long as you do see these three names together and do not try to divide them up. Very simply ‘Enlightenment’ is ‘Self-Realisation’ which is also ‘God-Realisation’. Let’s have a look at what this means in our own experience:
‘Enlightenment’ (i.e. to see light or to make lighter) is the same as ‘Self-Realisation’ (i.e. to see, become or to make real to you, your ‘Self’) and is the same as ‘God-Realisation’ (to see, become or to make real to you, ‘God’).
Can you see here that Enlightenment, in the sense of the ultimate spiritual perspective many seek, is to realise your Self AND to realise God? Since it is the same thing, that means your Self and God are the same thing! There is no separate God and no separate Self. Enlightenment is to realise your Self is God, and that God is your Self.
But what does that mean to ‘me’ here? It means the space you are feeling inside you now, and at any moment, is your Self and is God. You do not need to travel the world to realise your self, and you do not need to pray to the heavens to communicate with God. That space you can feel now IS God, which is You!
It’s all pretty obvious really, when you consider the old Bible teachings of God being everywhere and creating everything and, this being the case, God must also be within you (if not, how could he be everywhere, if he is not within you as well?!). This is confirmed in the teachings ‘I and my Father are One’, ‘Be still and know that I am God’ and ‘The kingdom of Heaven is within you’; and also in the Bhagavad-Gita of the teachings of Krishna, of realising the ‘Supreme-Personality’ within you, which is in all things.
So, you no longer have to wonder what Enlightenment is, or what it is to realise your Self or God. They all mean simply to realise the space within you IS God!
When it happens to you, what does that mean and how would it feel? Well, if ‘God’ is creating all things and you realise the space within you is God, then it means you realise the space within you is creating all things; but that’s not the mystery. The mind can pretty much get to grips with that idea in an abstract way. What it struggles with is the implications of this…
When the above experience occurs in the individual, initially only as a flash of insight, it is with the horrific knowledge that if this is indeed all ‘my’ own creation and ‘I’, whatever I am, am creating all of this, then in this ‘I’ am alone.
By grace we do not have to live with this for long, as the shock is frightening enough to burn a hole in the veil of illusion and then fades. The majority of the veil remains so we are able to get on with our everyday activities, receiving only occasional glimpses of the light we have seen until one day, possibly many years later, the insight becomes an experience. I no longer only know there is only one being here, one God, and that I am it. Now I feel the last bit of the veil of separation dissolving and there is only ‘Me’, my Self, in all I experience. It was always me, behind all the efforts and struggles, but now I am indeed the Living Truth. I understand the teachings ‘No-one comes to the father except by me’ as I have done it. I have gone through ‘me’, through my own ’self’ to realise I am indeed God.
However, despite this I am also not special. How can ‘One’ be special? I am alone, and therefore I alone am responsible for all that happens here. I have no-one to blame, nothing to achieve and nowhere to go, unless it suits me to do so here, in my own creation. I am indeed ‘God-Realised’. What more could it mean, but to realise ‘I’ am God.

The issue of psychics charging for their services is a controversial one. Over the years, I’ve received a few messages through my personal site that complained that psychics and mediums should never charge for their work. In researching this article, I spent some time in an online chat room that advertised free psychic readings, and I asked for people’s opinions on the matter. The topic certainly sparked controversy.

Those who oppose psychics charging for their services argue that a psychic gift is a gift from God, and gifts from God should never be used for profit. This breaks down to two issues when we examine it closely. The first issue is whether or not psychic ability is a “gift from God,” or is different from other gifts and talents, and the second is whether or not one should ever profit from a gift from God.

Perhaps some psychic gifts are “gifts from God,” in that they are abilities a person was born with, or received spontaneously. I’ve known few psychics, however, who haven’t taken their innate abilities and worked and studied for years to hone their spiritual faculties. Many have invested in lengthy schooling and training, and lead a lifestyle as disciplined as an Olympic athlete’s in terms of meditation, habits and focus in order to maintain clear access to subtle energies and information. I see little difference between the training and education of a doctor or teacher or artist and that of a psychic or medium.

We are all unique, divine creations. We have different strengths and talents. Some have a gift for mathematics, others an affinity for painting, others the height and coordination to play professional basketball. These are all “God-given” gifts. People profit from their God-given gifts all the time. Those who make a living doing that which they are most gifted at are said to have found their “true calling.”

Whether or not one is using a “God-given gift,” there is always the issue of resources and time. Though that which flows through the artist may be inspired by planes beyond, the artist must spend her precious time in this plane creating the art. Living in the physical means we must meet physical needs of food, shelter, clothing, etc… Though the “gift” may come from “God,” we should value the time and energy people put into that which we desire and benefit from.

Everyone has physical, practical needs. People exchange their products or services for the products and services others offer. Money is the medium that allows for an easy transfer of “energy” in such exchanges. Bartering is a great idea too. I have a client who is a talented artist who barters her art for readings. In cultures that have healers and shamans, the tribe has always taken care of its wise men and women, whether through gifts of food, housing or other goods or support. Our churches support their ministers and priests in many ways, including providing them with salaries. An equal exchange of energy is necessary, and natural law will ensure this one way or another.

There is also the issue that people tend to value something based on what they pay for it. If something is free, people tend to feel it’s not worth anything. In such a case, both the reader and the recipient are wasting their time and energy. If I did not charge for my reading work, I would be booked for years in advance with curious clients with frivolous questions, questions that the askers weren’t willing to invest anything in exploring. I would not be free to work with people who are genuinely seeking answers to burning issues in their lives.

Even I tend to get upset when I see a “famous” psychic charging hundreds of dollars for his or her work, but I also have to remember that no one is forcing anyone to pursue a reading with that person. We have to take responsibility for our own lives. If we want a Porsche, we don’t walk into the dealership and complain that the car is overpriced so we should get the Porsche for half price, or for free.

When I compare the many psychics I know to other professionals, most readers stand out for their generosity and compassion. Many readers go to great lengths to create avenues for those who can’t afford a reading to be able to obtain a free one. Several sites, including this one and my own (MuseNet), offer story contests with free readings as prizes. If a person is meant to have a reading, the Universe will find a way to make this happen, whether it’s through creating the funds for purchasing the service, or through the free contests and avenues that are available.

Often it is the people who can most afford to pay for a reading who balk at it. Others are not doing themselves any favors by setting up a “debtors” balance with the universe, for by expecting more than they give, they only increase the lack in their lives. To take without giving back is to create a debt that must be repaid eventually, one way or another.

Many readers are doing empowering and healing work, bringing through comforting messages from loved ones in spirit and guidance to help people to create what they want in their lives. If they were not compensated for it, most readers would not be able to afford to continue this work. A product or service rendered deserves compensation. I try to give more than I receive in my work, as do many sincere and compassionate readers. Of course, the Universe ensures that all things balance out in the end.

The human mind is one of the most highly regarded and misunderstood phenomena in the whole world. The human mind is nothing but a dissipation of energy, which takes place inside the human body. This dissipation of energy is the result of the duality that ultimately reigns supreme within every single individual on the face of this earth. People symbolize the two poles of this duality as being the ?head? and the ?heart?. Through the ages, the head has been attributed the power of shrewd and calculating intellect, while the heart remains content with being attributed as emotive, caring and sacrificing. In the midst of these two metaphorical enigmas, the will of the discerning individual dies a slow death. What exactly is the human mind? The point of the question remains the same. As an individual lives through life, he realizes that he has a divided will pertaining to every single question that is asked of him. He realizes that the duality within himself endures beyond time and if he does not surpass it with the sheer force of his will, it will lead him to his doom. The duality which reigns supreme in every single human being is essentially a dissipation of energy that takes place owing to a person?s will being diverted between the instinct and the intellect. The instinct which always relates itself to the baser and more primal facet of human existence constantly relishes at the prospect of gratification. On the other hand, the intellect is an entity that is solely developed through the lessons that man learns through the many different experiences that he undergoes in this world. The intellect in turn is directed towards an entirely different motive; that of self?preservation and self?enrichment. The differences between the motives that represent the two entities of instinct and intellect are subtle; but in the end they matter a lot.

In the duality that is created within the human being owing to the difference of motive and the difference of purpose that always exists between his instinct and his intellect, he can never rise above his limitations. Consequently he always remains impaired by the many weaknesses that rise as a result of this dissipation of energy. In the turmoil that thus rages within him, man loses both the motivation and the will power to remain pro?active in this world. Thus the human mind remains the single greatest weakness of a human being that on its own accord, keeps him from achieving greatness.

A simply example of the energy dissipation that takes place on account of unneeded thoughts can be demonstrated by simply observing oneself as one progresses through the day. In time an individual will realize that his breathing rate varies with the rate at which he thinks. The more an individual thinks, the faster he breathes. This is owing to the dissipation of energy that takes place in the thoughts that emit from the human mind. The breathing rate of an individual increases in order to produce the excess energy that is needed to create those thoughts.

Thus, unneeded thoughts only end up making an individual more weak in his will as they seep away the motivational energy that is instrumental in remaining pro?active in this world. Thus the fact that any individual must always bear in mind is that he should always be a dispassionate observer of his thoughts. He should always be aware of the source from whence those thoughts spur. He should be always aware of the motivation that goes behind every single thought?thread. Through that awareness, the needless thoughts will gradually cease existing and the individual will then transgress to the stage where his mind won?t be a deterrent to a productive and creative way of life…
